What is plumazo?

Dec 28, 2007 by Mark Luczak

If the beginning of knowledge is to call things by their correct name, choosing a name for a Web site (or company) is a crucial step towards getting the enterprise off to a good start. So, how did we come up with 'plumazo?'

The word 'plumazo' (pronounced plue-mah'-zo) comes from a Spanish word that can be translated, loosely, as 'a stroke of a pen or brush' and describes the variety of services—writing, editing, and painting—we provide.

I am part business professional and part artist and wanted a name that related to both fields. Searching for a domain name that related to writing and painting, all the 'good ones' were taken.

Here is where my wife's Hispanic background came in handy. She suggested looking for Spanish words about writing and painting. Once we found plumazo, and that it was available as a domain name, that was that.

I have two decades of experience and can provide a variety of technical and marketing communications services including writing, editing, Web content development, Web site quality assurance/testing, and corporate presentation services.

"The worst days of those who love what they do are better than the best days of those who don't."

Most of my experience is with entrepreneurs and other small, or startup, companies that lack in-house written and verbal communications expertise as well as larger, high technology companies looking to supplement their staff.

Business communications and
Web content development

The process of developing your material with the help of a writer better organizes the concepts and clarifies the message. The result is a consistent, coherent statement about your products and services—and your company.

"The goal of effective communication should be for the reader to think, 'Me, too!' not to ask, 'So what?'"

Let's work together and make your corporate literature and Web content communicate your message to your target audience in a professional manner.

Public speaking

Many people find public speaking to be a very uncomfortable task. I used to feel that way. With help from Toastmasters and lots of on-the-job experience, now I enjoy the challenge. I still get nervous but I have fun, too.

I also like Teddy Roosevelt's "Three Be's" of public speaking.

"Be clear. Be brief. Be seated."

There are many good examples to follow. Of course, there are the classics like John F. Kennedy's Inaugural Address and Martin Luther King's address at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.

Art and painting

Painting has been my passion for as long as I can remember.

Cezanne resolved "to work in silence until the day when I should feel myself able to defend in theory the results of my attempts."

I agree. For a time, I kept a journal about painting—principles, notes, quotes I wanted to remember. This is where I keep them now.

Visit the Plumazo Art Gallery to see images of some of my work.

Et cetera

There are other things I want to post on this Web site. As Jim Rohn has said,

"There are three things to share with others: your pictures, your library and your personal journals. Do all you can to make them more valuable to future generations than your furniture."
